What happens when a child with autism enters the Ontario Education System? |

Children who have been identified as “exceptional” (with a disability) attract to their schools board regular education funding, also referred to as “grants”. This grant is approximately $9 000/year per child.
In addition to these regular education grants, children with “exceptionalities” also attract to their respective school boards special education funding. Under the old special education funding models (referred to as Intensive Support Amounts – ISA), school boards were awarded funding based on severity of the child’s disability, ranging from $12 000/year per child to $54 000/year per child. This funding is provided by the Ministry of Education to the school boards. Unfortunately, the money allocated to the school boards do not follow the child, but are spent at the discretion of the school boards.
