September 01, 2007
The Ontario Autism Coalition (OAC) is pleased to invite you to the following event as part of our ongoing campaign to raise awareness of Autism Issues.
Actions Speak Louder than Announcements
Who: George Smitherman, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care for Ontario
What: Breakfast with Minister George Smitherman
When: Wednesday, September 5, 2007 from 7:30 to 9:00am
Where: Azure Restaurant ( 225 Front St. West , west of University Avenue)
Why: For some reason, Minister Smitherman has decided that he has nothing to do with autism. The Ministry of Health is nowhere to be found when autism issues are being discussed. Children sit on lengthy waitlists for assessments which can be as long as two years. Once diagnosed with autism, they are then pointed to more waitlists for publicly funded scientifically valid intervention. The few who are fortunate to finally receive the service are unable to do so in the education system while all other children in Ontario are able to access their treatment in the education system.
The Ontario Autism Coalition (OAC) will be making an appearance at Minister Smitherman’s breakfast event to bring the autism crisis to the attention of Minister Smitherman and his government. The OAC will be joined by members of Toronto Action for Social Change (TASC), a non-violent social justice action group whose members have long sought significant changes in social policies that punish the most vulnerable members of Ontario ‘s society. The OAC invites parents, family members and interested individuals to join them in this worthwhile event.
This event is a preview of what Liberal MPP’s can expect as part of an Ontario-wide Autism Day of Action on Saturday, September 15, 2007.
A copy of the flyer we will be handing out at this event can be downloaded here .
Contact Laura Kirby-McIntosh, Executive Member of the OAC if you would like additional information on either this event or the Autism Day of Action.
