Emily McDowell comes rushing over to her mother, arms outstretched, ready for a hug. Her mother, Kelly McDowell, kneels down, catching the smiling five year old who has just finished up her day at Quatre-Rivieres elementary school in Orangeville. She asks her daughter how her day was, and the little girl replies, “it was a good day.” Emily looks down at the ground. An exchange like this, seemingly average for most parents, is something more special for McDowell.
